Digital detoxes are actually quite good

WELL! This month has been weirdly productive. Possibly because I'm still benefiting from the post-winter-break holiday glow, and the day-job hasn't quite ramped up yet; but I'll pretend that it's maybe just going to be like this forever, and I'm now awesome at work-life balance and Getting Shit Done.

I think another major factor has been my follow-through on a New Year's Resolution: getting off social media more. I'm not someone who uses it a lot, but it does occupy more time than it should and I have some really bad, albeit not uncommon habits — mindless scrolling, for example, or turning to it whenever I'm bored for even a millisecond.

And boredom is good; essential even. Boredom is when your mind wanders and imagines and comes up with cool ideas. It's when you notice things and people and the things around you. I kind of wanted to start being bored, and more than that, being ok with being bored. So I deleted a bunch of social media apps and put myself on a ban for a month.

So far, it's been incredible. I don't miss it, and I think I can easily say that this has been my most creative month in years. More ideas, more energy, more enthusiasm, more time.

This is your sign. Delete the app. Go create.

Glorious messy collages incoming...
